Understanding My Motivation for Pursuing an MSW Degree

I have been working as a social worker in long-term care for the past four years. One patient, in particular, has profoundly influenced my commitment to earning an MSW degree. This experience has shaped my dedication to becoming a better advocate for my patients. One of the residents in our facility was discharged against my wishes. She came to me, tears streaming down her face, expressing her fear of being abused or neglected by her children. Her insurance had cut her off, and I was told there was nothing I could do. She cried all day, and the next day, just before her discharge, she passed away.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a constant reminder of why I want to further my education. I want to be in a better position to help those who are vulnerable.

My Early Career and Inspirations

After high school, I entered the workforce as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant (CNA). I worked in private care and nursing homes. Early in my career, I noticed many residents were not receiving adequate attention. I had many insightful conversations with a remarkable 95-year-old retired physician named Frederick XXXX. He encouraged me to pursue nursing to have a greater say in the care provided to residents. Inspired by his words, I obtained my associate's degree in nursing.

However, my path took a turn when I realized that a social work degree would allow me to make a more significant impact. I switched my focus and earned my Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). This decision felt right in my heart, as I believed it would better prepare me to contribute to the needy residents I served.

The Impact of My BSW Experience

Completing my BSW filled me with pride. Initially, I thought I had reached my professional goal. However, as time passed, I realized I still lacked a voice in advocating for vulnerable residents. The memory of the noble woman who passed away on the day of her mandatory discharge haunts me. She was a dedicated school teacher, and her story fuels my desire to pursue an MSW degree at XXXX University. I want to engage in research focused on our most vulnerable residents in America’s nursing homes, particularly in Eastern Tennessee.

My goal is not only to contribute to research but also to participate in creating services that protect those who cannot advocate for themselves, especially the elderly.

Role Models and Personal Growth

My grandmother, Virginia XXXX, has been my first and most prominent role model. She saved me from foster care and showed me the patience and love I needed. I also cherish the encouragement I received from Frederick, who believed in my potential. His voice still resonates with me, reminding me that I am smarter than I realize.

Over the past decade, my faith in God has deepened. This spiritual growth has instilled in me a sense of dignity and empowerment. I strive to follow in the footsteps of those who serve the most vulnerable among us.

Advocating for Change in Healthcare

I aspire to design and operate programs for individuals falling through the cracks of our healthcare system. I have witnessed many changes in insurance policies that negatively affect residents and their families. Residents often worry about their health and the financial burden of care. This stress can hinder their recovery.

I have seen residents discharged from care when they still need assistance, simply because their insurance deemed it necessary. I believe discharges should be based on the best interests of the residents, not insurance guidelines.

Addressing Community Needs

I have also observed young adults with disabilities placed in long-term care who wish to return to the community but lack resources. My dream is to change this reality. I have seen residents discharged only to return to the hospital days later, creating a cycle of instability.

My vision includes educating the community about insurance policies, empowering them to plan for their loved ones' care. I want to ensure they understand their voices matter in the political landscape, especially regarding candidates' positions on disability care. Additionally, I aim to educate healthcare workers on designing and operating group homes to meet the needs of vulnerable community members.

My Personal Journey and Empathy

I have a deep passion for serving mature adults with disabilities or impairments. My background has shaped my empathy and concern for the voiceless. I spent my early years in foster care in Los Angeles, CA. My mother struggled with addiction, and my father, new to the country from Nigeria, lacked the resources to care for me. I felt lost in the system until my grandmother took me in, providing a stable home.

Despite my anger and bitterness, my grandmother's unwavering support transformed my life. I am not just a former foster child; I am a social worker committed to giving back to my community. My dream is to create a non-profit organization that addresses the needs of at-risk individuals lacking resources and services in our healthcare system.

Gaining Experience in Healthcare

After spending four years at a Metro Nashville Health and Rehab facility with 419 residents, I have gained invaluable insights into the healthcare challenges faced by various groups. This includes those with mental health issues, HIV & AIDS, and veterans with PTSD. Assisting residents with Medicaid applications and applying for SSI and disability has brought me immense joy. I stay informed about changes in these areas to ensure my residents receive the support they need.

I have also volunteered in the community for many years, focusing on healthcare initiatives for our most needy residents. I helped create a non-profit called A Hand for Caregivers, aimed at boosting the morale of healthcare workers. We conducted surveys to assess their needs and organized educational fairs in partnership with local colleges.

Additionally, I have volunteered in Kenya, working to rebuild schools, and in Bangkok, Thailand, helping at-risk children avoid exploitation.
