An Israeli woman with a deep affection and admiration for New York City for several reasons, ____ University is my top choice for pursuing my MSW Degree. I hold ____ in high regard as the oldest and most esteemed Jewish University in the city and am eager to join your academic community.
I am seeking a comprehensive education in social work foundations, theory, and practice through your rigorous MSW Program at ____. I am particularly keen to excel in my area of interest: childhood trauma from a multidisciplinary perspective. Having experienced abandonment by my mother as a child, I went through my own trauma and recovery. I have moved past my personal trauma and now focus my energy on understanding the causes of childhood abuse and trauma to work towards prevention and healing for victims.
Another reason I am suited for an MSW program in NYC is the city's experience with a devastating terrorist attack, which left a lasting impact. NYC provides a unique setting to study trauma, especially that resulting from terrorism. As an Israeli committed to supporting vulnerable individuals in my own country, I am particularly concerned about the safety of our people, especially children, who face similar threats of terrorism. Israeli children endure trauma from political violence and terrorism, which I am eager to study.
I initially began my career in hi-tech, working in the computer industry. After 8 years, I felt unfulfilled and left my job to pursue a BSW, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and appreciation for counseling. I have learned that many seek counseling to achieve happiness, and counseling becomes a process of identifying and overcoming obstacles to happiness, leading to greater fulfillment and satisfaction through self-awareness.
I am drawn to a client-centered philosophy and a counseling environment fostering personal growth. My interest in psychological issues, especially childhood matters, has grown through years of reading. My aspiration is to join a group private practice providing psychotherapy as a social worker.
I am currently enrolled in a certification course for sexual abuse therapy in Israel, building a foundation in understanding how sexual abuse impacts family and interpersonal relationships, leading to emotional and behavioral disorders. I am also especially eager to learn about eating disorders, self-harm, addiction, and other related issues at ____.
While working at a detox center, I cared for a 15-year-old Ethiopian client who moved to Israel as a baby. With a complex family background and limited trust in social services, she was wary of social workers. Although I had some success in helping her, I realized I could have better understood Ethiopian culture, the mores of social interaction, and cultural nuances. Most keen to approach social work with multicultural perspectives, I look forward to providing effective and culturally appropriate services in diverse places like New York City and Israel.
Thank you for considering my application to ____.
