Since September 2014, I have been working as a therapist during my internship with five adolescent female clients at the ____ Community Treatment Center at ____ University Hospital in ____, New York. I employ CBT and motivational interviewing techniques, among other strategies, and stay informed on the latest research regarding self-harm in adolescent females, particularly in terms of interventions. I attend most of ____ University’s continuing education workshops to enhance my knowledge on topics related to my research interests, especially self-injury and addictions. I have ambitious dreams and hopes for both my future and the future of the individuals and families I aim to assist, as well as the research I aspire to publish. My current internship aligns well with my future research interests.
I transferred to the Master's Program in Social Work at ____ after completing one year at another university because I met several individuals from your program at the NASW conference in Albany and was greatly impressed by the emphasis on critical thinking at ____. I also came to value how both your Master's and Doctoral Programs are designed to cultivate leaders in Social Work. I was eager to learn to think independently and creatively about contemporary issues in Social Work, and I am extremely pleased with my decision to pursue my doctoral studies at ____.
I am now nearing the completion of my Master's Degree in Social Work at ____, having conducted extensive research on self-harming behaviors in female adolescents from interdisciplinary perspectives. This has deepened my passion for research in this area. My commitment to this issue has been reinforced by my experience as an intern working daily with adolescent girls who self-injure privately as a means of escaping emotional conflict. I aspire to be accepted into the PhD Program at ____ because I hold our university in high regard and have immense confidence in my professors to guide me appropriately. I believe no other program is better suited to prepare me to contribute significantly to the study of addiction and self-harm among adolescent girls and to develop effective methods to address, treat, and heal the self-inflicted wounds.
I am eager to deepen my understanding and continue to think creatively about various social work issues. I have conducted significant research, for example, on gambling addictions among seniors. I prioritize intervention in my studies and am drawn to topics where intervention plays a central role. Substance abuse is another critical area I intend to remain engaged with throughout my life. I hope to publish research related to my practice with adolescents, covering topics such as substance abuse, sexual violence, and other adverse childhood experiences.
Deeply committed to lifelong learning, I am a non-traditional student who transitioned from a career in Education to Social Work. I believe my educational background will enhance my abilities as a social worker. I aspire to teach at the university level and establish my own private practice. Additionally, I aim to publish peer-reviewed journal articles addressing new and innovative approaches to the challenges and issues I will face in my career.
I earned my Master's in Education in 2007 and spent eight years as a Head Teacher in Great Neck, New York, working with children aged 3 to 6. I was heavily involved in IEPs and gained valuable insights through meetings with various professionals to secure necessary services for the children (OT, PT, Speech, etc.). I graduated with a 3.9 GPA and will complete ____’s MSW Program in May 2015 with a GPA of 3.95. Since childhood, I have dreamed of earning a PhD in a helping profession. I aim to help people heal from both physical and psychological wounds while empowering them to realize their full potential. I firmly believe in the unique potential of each individual. I used to tell my kindergarten students that my superpower was discovering each of their superpowers, which usually involved traits like kindness, empathy, or friendship, making them feel strong and encouraging positive behavior.
Since 2012, I have been a member of NASW and currently serve as the President of the Social Action Group, Chairperson of the Student Advisory Committee, and a Committee Member of the LGBTQ Group. I have been a Graduate Assistant since 2013, tutoring both BSW and MSW students in areas like APA citations and research in Policy and Human Behavior. I also belong to the Adult Learners Group and helped establish the Honors society for the School of Social Work at ____, inspiring students to graduate with honors and join a community of academic scholars. I will be recognized as a CASAC-T by February 2015.
I have a profound passion for research on children and families, largely inspired by my early work as a teacher of young children. This passion is now being realized in my role as a social worker. I can imagine nothing more fulfilling than dedicating my professional life to studying self-injury among adolescent girls, as I believe this issue is of utmost importance and requires significant attention.
Thank you for considering my application to your esteemed Social Work PhD Program at ____.
